Strangely, I didn’t feel the expected shock. Only a confirmation. I had never been a girl. I had been a guest.
When I shared the results in the family group, my mom called me in tears. Not to apologize. To silence me.
« Delete that, Grace. You don’t understand… »
Naomi, on the other hand, contented herself with a message:
Now you know.
When I confronted her, she laughed.
« I carried this secret for twenty years. Now, everyone pays what they owe. »
I then understood that she was preparing something larger. A maneuver to erase me from the estate.
I hired a lawyer, Sarah Ang, who specializes in complex estates. After reviewing the evidence, she was adamant that:
« Someone is trying to wipe you off the legacy. »
Three days later, the family’s lawyer summoned us for the reading of the will.
Naomi arrived confident, accompanied by a lawyer known for his legal brutality. She was convinced that she had won.
The will began as follows:
« I am bequeathing 70% of my estate to my daughter, Grace Ellington. »
Naomi stood up screaming. « She’s not his daughter! »
The lawyer continued, unperturbed:
« I’ve known since she was two years old that Grace is not my biological daughter. I raised her by choice. And I entrust my inheritance to him in full conscience. »
Then came the final blow.
