1. Marinade
In a bowl, mix the ground beef with the soy sauce, olive oil, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper. Marinate in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. 2. Preparing the
potatoes Peel the potatoes and cut them into very thin slices (use a mandolin if possible). Rinse them and dry them thoroughly with a clean towel. 3. Fry the
meat In a pan, sauté the chopped onion in a small amount of oil. Add the marinated beef and fry over high heat, shredding it with a spatula. The meat should not be completely cooked as it cooks out in the oven.
4. Assemble the
dish Grease a baking dish or casserole dish with butter. Place the first layer of potato slices. Lightly salt and pepper. Add a layer of ground beef. Repeat this until all the ingredients are used and finally arrange the potatoes.
5. Cream sauce
In a bowl, mix the whipping cream with the nutmeg. Spread the sauce evenly over the dish. The cream should reach almost to the level of the ingredients. 6. Bake
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 30 minutes. Remove the foil, top with grated cheese, and bake for another 20 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbling.
Chef’s Tip
For an even richer version, rub the bottom of the dish with a halved clove of garlic and add chopped smoked bacon to the beef mixture before assembling the dish.
