She hesitated, looking embarrassed. « I don’t want to disturb you. I can manage. »
« It’s nothing. Let me help you. »
She put her arms around his neck and he slowly lifted her up. She was lighter than he had imagined, but her clothes were weighed down by the water and her shoes slipped on the sidewalk. He tightened his grip to keep her balanced.
« You’re very nice, » she whispered. His voice broke slightly.
Mateo glanced at the imposing glass building just a few blocks away. His future was waiting for him there, but this woman needed him immediately. He turned away from the interview direction and drove her to a taxi rank he hoped to find nearby.
As they turned the corner, an elegant anthracite sedan stopped at their level. A man in a suit suddenly opened the door and rushed towards them, panic in his eyes.
« Mom? » His voice trembled as he rushed to her side.
The older woman hugged Mateo tighter, as a surprise, and then relaxed. « I’m fine, Oliver. I just felt unwell. »
Mateo felt the man’s gaze turn towards him. « Did you help her? »
« Yes, » Mateo replied in a soft voice. « She was alone and sick. »
The man nodded, his expression softening. « Thank you. I’m Cyrus Warren. Can I take you somewhere? You’re soaked. »
Mateo shook his head. « I have an interview. I’m already late. »
« Which company? »
He mentioned it without thinking, and he noticed a subtle change in Cyrus’ posture, a glimmer of recognition in his eyes.
« Let us lead you. Please. Cyrus pointed to the sedan.
